The team at Olson Orthodontics understand that everyone looks forward to the day that they get their braces off! It is one of our favorite days too! This is also the day that your retainers become your best friends.
What do retainers do?
Retainers keep your teeth from shifting. Your teeth naturally tend to shift positions as you age due to growing and chewing. This natural movement can reverse your orthodontic treatment to the point where it is noticeable. Retainers are custom made for your bite to keep your teeth in their new, more desirable positions. They maintain your beautiful smile!
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, straighter teeth tend to be easier to clean which reduces the chance of getting cavities. Also, people chew more effectively when their teeth are correctly aligned. This decreases plaque buildup and allows you to get the most nutrients out of the food you eat. Wearing your retainer also helps keep your teeth healthy!
How to keep them safe
We always suggest that you wear your retainers as directed by Dr. Lauren Olson. If you are able to wear them forever, that is awesome! For tips on cleaning your retainer, click HERE.
When you are not wearing your retainer, it is important that you keep it in your case. This keeps them away from pets, from being thrown away, and from being lost. If you do happen to break or lose your retainer, please contact our office as soon as possible for details on how to have it replaced.
Olson Orthodontics is so excited to be a part of your smile journey and love getting to see this last phase of your treatment. Although we always miss our patients, we know that your smile will make a difference!
