HANDLING COMMON ORTHODONTIC PROBLEMS

Protruding or Broken Wire:
If a wire breaks or sticks out from your braces, it can hurt your cheeks, tongue, or gums. Do not cut the wire. Try using the eraser end of a pencil to push the wire into a better position. If that doesn’t work, put a small piece of orthodontic wax over the end of the wire.

If the wire caused a sore, rinse your mouth with warm salt water or an antiseptic rinse to keep the area clean. To reduce discomfort, try an over-the-counter pain reliever. If the pain continues or the sore gets worse, call us to schedule an appointment.

Loose Bracket:
If you chew something hard or sticky, the resin can weaken or break, causing an orthodontic bracket to come loose and poke into your gums, tongue, or cheek. Put orthodontic wax over the bracket to keep it from poking you and provide some comfort until you can schedule an appointment.

Loose Band or Spacer:
If a band becomes loose or falls off, do not try to put it back on. Call us to schedule an appointment. If a spacer falls out, please use the provided instruction and spacers to replace it. If you are unable to place the new spacer, please call us to schedule an appointment.
