How do you know if you or your child need braces?
One of the questions parents of preteens frequently ask is, “Does my child need braces?”. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that you take your son or daughter in for an exam with an orthodontist around age seven to see if they will need orthodontic treatment.
If your child has not had an orthodontic consultation, there are other ways to know if they may need braces. First of all, if you notice that your child has a cross bite, underbite, or overbite with their permanent teeth that is a sign that your child may possibly need treatment. Many times your general dentist will let you know if they feel like your child needs braces and will refer you to a specialist. Last, a pediatrician may also refer you to an orthodontist for a consultation if they feel your child’s teeth alignment or jaw is causing other health issues. When questions come up, it is best to see an orthodontic specialist to get a professional opinion.
